History of Alabama Slammer Cocktail

Difford’s Guide has a great post that goes into detail about the history of the Alabama Slammer and if you’d like to check that out click here.

In short, the Alabama Slammer has appeared throughout various bartenders guides in the 1970s and 1980s. Although, in the 1971 version of the playboy bartender’s guide by Thomas Mario the drink was not called the Alabama slammer, just the Alabama. This is most likely the first recorded version of the Alabama slammer that people drink today.

Recipe Notes & F.A.Q’s

What is southern comfort?

Southern Comfort is an American fruit-flavored liqueur, the drink has subtle spice and fruit accents as well.

Is there a good substitute for southern comfort?

A true Alabama Slammer uses southern comfort, so if you don’t use it you aren’t technically making an Alabama slammer. That being said if you would like to find something that tastes similar to make a similar tasting drink, than you could use your preferred whiskey or bourbon and add a dash of orange liqueur.

What is sloe gin?

Sloe gin is a gin made from Sloes. Sloes are a fruit cultivated mostly in the UK which are a relative to the plum. They are not widely popular, the drink is usually between 15 and 30 percent ABV.
