How to Make a Mexican Martini

Most of the time martini’s are made with gin. But this does not mean that you should only drink gin martinis! A Mexican Martini is one of the most overlooked cocktail recipes out there, and it also happens to be one of my favourites.

This recipe is pretty flexible in the sense that it can be shaken or stirred and it only is going to take around 2 minutes from start to finish.

Here’s What You’re Going to Need

For this drink recipe, we used a cocktail shaker. However, some people prefer stirred over shaken. If you do shake your cocktail it’s going to water it down. But most importantly make it ice cold. What I’m trying to get at; if you are going to stir your martini, make sure everything is ice cold!

You’re also going to need:

  • 2 oz Milagro Tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau Liqueur
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Lime Juice
  • 5 ice cubes
  • 1 slice Lime

History of Mexican Martini’s

There are different hypotheses about the roots of a martini, as well as a large number of recipes and variations of the drink. A traditional martini has gin and dry vermouth, which are served incredibly cold with a green olive or lime garnish— additional ingredients were quickly removed from the earliest version. The gin-to-vermouth ratio in the earliest version of the Martini was 1:1, although the volume of gin was steadily rising over the years. The ratios are viewed today and vary in their personal tastes with a great deal of subjectivity. Many people are at odds in terms of the origin of the actual drink, but one thing that everyone does agree on is the location, America.

What if the drink is too strong for me?

If the drink is too strong, you can use less alcohol or dilute with some water/mixer.

Can I substitute the liquor in this cocktail?

Yes, although you might not get the desired taste, you can switch out the liquor for vodka or gin.

Some Other Common Martinis

Martinis are most commonly made with gin. However, they’re also made with vodka and tequila. If you’re looking to try some other martini drink recipes, we have a vodka martini recipe here and a gin martini recipe here.

This version of a martini is called the “Mexican Martini”. It originated in Texas and has the same ingredients as above except it uses olive juice instead of lime juice, and it adds some sprite at the end.
