History of the Bushwacker Cocktail

The Bushwacker originated in the spring of 1975 at the Sapphire Pub in Sapphire Village, St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. It was created by a bartender who worked there named Angie Conigliaro and the restaurant’s manager Tom Brokamp. It was soon brought back to the U.S and made popular in Florida.

There has been an annual Bushwacker festival at Quietwater Beach, Florida to celebrate the drink. The festival has been running since 1986.

Recipe Notes & F.A.Q’s

Is there a different type of liquor I can use?

The original recipe called for Vodka instead of dark rum. If you need to use another liquor, this is what we would recommend.

Do I need to use chocolate syrup and nutmeg?

No you don’t have to. If you prefer to make it taste more like a milkshake then we reccomend it. There are many variations of this drink with some including and not including the chocolate and nutmeg.

Some Other Ways This Drink is Made

In this video, the bartender substitutes multiple ingredients for others. The main changes are using cream instead of milk and using Irish cream instead of cream of coconut.

In this video, the bartender makes this into an alcohol-filled milkshake better than most variations of the cocktail. They substitute vanilla ice cream for milk and also use Irish cream.
